The Best Books and Courses To Help You Learn Italian

Perhaps you would like to surprise your fellow travelers by learning some basic Italian before your next holiday in Lake Como. The big Lake Como resort towns such as Como and Bellagio will always have service in English. But outside of these big towns, most of the residents and shop owners do not speak English, so it helps to know some basic Italian to help you fully enjoy your stay.

The Italians are generally very warm-hearted people and will light up with any effort you give to speak their beautiful language. Just a quick "Ciao" or "Buon Giorno" will create a bright smile on the face of whomever you may encounter.

If you’ve been researching ways to learn Italian, you’ll know that there are plenty of different programs available. What you need depends on your ambition, amount of time available, enthusiasm, and whether you want to learn just the basic phrases to get by, or if you plan on eventually studying the rules of complex Italian grammar.

Phrasebook

Rick Steves’ Italian Phrase Book and Dictionary is by far the most popular and handy phrasebook to take with you on your trip. Even if you don’t know a single word of Italian, it will help you get around in a variety of situations…booking a hotel, asking for directions, exchanging money, getting a discount, etc. It is very compact, taking up very little space in your luggage and has a comprehensive pronunciation guide to make sure you speak correctly.

If you want to learn to speak Italian like a native and are willing to commit weeks and months to study it, the best course is Italian I by Pimsleur.
It is the most pricey, but it works to ensure you become fluent and consistently gets rave reviews.
