There are three subway lines in the city which are collectively known as the Milan transportation metro system ATMA. In fact, there are more than 280 km of track and 20 lines. The town is also considered to be the second railway hub of Italy and is made of five important stations. The suburban rail system connects higher Milan to towns like Como or Varese.

The Suburban Railway System (the emblem is an enormous green S on a blue background) operate less often than Metro trains (depending on the line, they vary from 1 to 4 per-hour) but, you’ll find as many as 12 trains/hour in central Milan between important central stations such as Porta Vittoria. These lines are typically marked using a large blue line on maps.

Milan Transportation

ATMA manages a community transport network that is quite efficient (especially the underground lines and the streetcars). Single tickets are available from newsstands and pubs, daily and two-day tickets are offered at subway newsstands and the tourist information office. Single tickets are valid for 75 minutes, during which you can make use of them on as numerous trams and buses as you enjoy and for one metro trip. Your time begins once you validate it by inserting into a box which prints the date and time onto it. All these are discovered inside trams and buses and at the turnstiles at the metro.

To determine the way you must go on any line, locate the station you wish to go to on the Milan Metro map If you keep tracking the line past your station to the station by the end of this line, you will understand the ?name?of the way you need to head toward. Bear in mind the red and green lines each split up at one finish, nonetheless, so if your stop is on one of the legs of the Y you should pay a lot more attention to which station name is right at the end of this line.

Getting to Lake Como via Milan Transportation

There are bus shuttle companies that can take you easily from every Milan airport to the center of Milan. Simply leave the airport you have arrived in, and follow the bus signs outside to get to the various shuttle buses. Tickets can be easily purchased directly from the driver. Getting directly to Lake Como from Milan airports is still tricky, and you can use the following handy tool to help you plan out your itinerary.

You can also hop between the various airports, such as by way of the Orio shuttle that can take you directly from Bergamo airport to the Malpensa of Linate airports. Just be aware that these airports are not located close to each other. Give yourself at least 3 hours time!

A few more tips:

It’s best not to purchase any tickets online , because then you are bound to the bus service that you purchased. This gives flexibility to decide on the initial departing bus, instead of waiting in the airport. What if you can hop on another bus service ready to go in 2 minutes – while the one you purchase online won’t leave for another 20 minutes? Expect to pay for bus tickets to the city centre at EUR 10 round-trip, or EUR5 one-way.

Exploring Bergamo near Milan

Many people overlook Bergamo as a tourist destination. This walled town easily lies along the route for anyone seeing Italy’s northern lake nation between Milano and Verona. Although the outskirts of Bergamo may have little to offer (together with the exclusion of the Carrara Academya collection of Renaissance masters) when you enter through the 16th century Venetian walls you are in for a treat! It’s the upper region of Bergamo that is oh so charming. Go past the central Piazza, and you will find charming, winding narrow roads with many charming boutiques and trattorias. You’ll soon find that the farther away you get in the city centre, the quieter it becomes behind the antique walls.
